Among a dozen samples Anna stares
The sugar on her tongue of chocolate frosting cares
A million voices fill her ears with different things
But Anna’s sight’s on the golden rings
The flower lady’s waving colors in her eyes
Flurries of white lace surround the happy bride
Anna’s mother told her when she was only four
Promised Anna after this she would want nothing more
But Anna found the letter lying on the kitchen table
And Anna’s dreams flew out the door and crashed into the fable
Now forty years since Anna read those sullen stinging words
She still dreams she could get him back
That wasn’t his voice she heard
For days she stood before the mirror draped in white
Stared at the girl in tears, future out of sight
Letter said he’d changed his mind and didn’t want a wife
Found a girl in Vegas and started a new life
But Anna found the letter lying on the kitchen table
And Anna’s dreams flew out the door and crashed into the fable
Now forty years since Anna read the letter of her pain
She still dreams she could get him back
The dress was not in vain
And these days Anna still puts on the dress she never wore
She dances in the attic as she’d practiced long before
She still puts on the shining ring she couldn’t give him back
And curses her mother’s fable that made her think to marry Jack
But Anna found the letter lying on the kitchen table
And Anna’s dreams flew out the door and crashed into the fable
Now forty years since Anna left a life she’d never known
She never saw the chance ahead to build one of her own
